How it works
Four steps, and only the first one involves you
- 1 You tell us what you have and we agree which hosting suits it.
- 2 We copy the files and the database onto our hosting and get the site running there, while your live site carries on as normal.
- 3 We change the DNS records and nameservers so visitors start arriving at the new copy instead of the old one.
- 4 Once everybody is seeing the new one, the old hosting can be closed down.
A simple site, with all the details to hand, is usually done in a few hours. A large one can take up to a couple of days depending on its size and how complicated it is.
What to have ready
- Where the site is hosted now — the company name is usually enough
- Your login details for that hosting, if you have them
- The domain name you want moved
- Your login for wherever the domain itself is registered, which is very often a different company
- A contact there, if you do not have the login
Do not worry if you cannot find all of it. Half the transfers we do start with somebody who has no idea who hosts their site. We can work most of it out ourselves.
