eBay listing templates: making the fees work harder

You are paying for every listing either way. A template built for your business makes each one sell more than the item it is advertising.

Selling on eBay is not cheap. You pay to list and you pay again on what sells, so the question worth asking is what each listing is doing for you beyond shifting that one item.

A listing designed for your business rather than dropped into eBay's default layout does three jobs at once: it sells the item, it sells you, and it sends people to the rest of what you stock.

What a good template does

  • Puts your selling points in front of the buyer instead of leaving them to guess
  • Shows the item properly — several photographs, the angles that answer the questions buyers actually have
  • Sends people into your eBay shop, so they choose between your products rather than between yours and a competitor's
  • Looks professional, which is most of what trust is on a marketplace

The one that matters most

The shop link. Without it, a buyer who likes the look of you but not that particular item goes back to the search results, which is where all your competitors are. With it, they browse your range instead. That single change is usually worth more than everything else on the page put together.

Looking like a professional

On a marketplace, a buyer has no website to judge you by and no shop to walk into. The listing is the whole impression. A clean, consistent, well-photographed listing tells somebody you will pack the item properly and post it when you said you would — and that is what decides it when two sellers have the same thing at the same price.

A note on how eBay works now

eBay has tightened up considerably on what a listing can contain — active content like scripts and embedded frames is no longer allowed, and templates built years ago often break or get stripped. A template written for how eBay works today is a different thing from one written for how it worked a decade ago. If yours is old, it is worth a look.

Send us a link to one of your current listings and we will tell you honestly whether it is doing its job.
